Bits and Bites- Wednesday February 27th

Its shaping up to be one heck of a dark and dreary hump day, so I’ve scrounged up a few items that caught my eye from across the net……

Remember that mayor I blogged about a couple months ago, the one involved in a bit of a scandal over the Myspace pictures of her posing in her scanty black bra and panties on the cities fire truck? (  http://lailayuile.wordpress.com/2008/01/08/bits-and-bites/ ) She has has now been officially stripped of her title and removed from office as mayor. http://ca.news.yahoo.com/s/capress/080227/koddities/oddity_mayor_underwear  That’s one way to remove someone you don’t like from office, and a lesson to everyone- the internet is a PUBLIC domain, no matter what. Once you’re out there, you’re out there, and even the most benign picture can come back to haunt you….. Makes you wonder though- this mayor was ousted for lingerie pics that were on the net before her election to office, yet Sam Sullivan still manages to preside despite freely admitting he provided money to a hooker  several times to buy heroin, as well as allowing an addict to use in his vehicle after he purchased said addict the drugs to do so ????? Somethings seriously wrong with this world if that isn’t enough to make anyone question the thought process of a man entrusted with the operation of a major city.

A controversial news item on the CBC website caught my eye, and brings to my mind the furor over a black only school proposal up for talks under the Ontario public school system. http://lailayuile.wordpress.com/2008/02/01/black-and-white-makes-grey/    Lois Boone, head of the aboriginal task force  who presented the report, and who is also vice -president of the Prince George School board, is advising the school-district to open a separate elementary school for aboriginal students –  one that would be run according to aboriginal philosophies and principles and have an aboriginal curriculum.  25% of the districts students are aboriginal and 63% of those drop out.  http://www.cbc.ca/canada/british-columbia/story/2008/02/26/bc-aboriginalschool.html        Big mistake, in my eyes. When the public school system starts funding schools, that in all reality, are essentially private, you open the door to any special interest group thats crying foul to have their own school, all on tax payers dollars. Prince George is my hometown, where I grew up, and the problems within the aboriginal community there go far deeper than any ” aboriginal only school” will change. The problems lie within the aboriginal community itself, and are no different than those found anywhere else in the province. Change MUST begin within the aboriginal communities themselves, because no amount of segregated schooling is going to change what the majority of those kids go home to every day after school- alcoholism, drugs, poverty. Here’s a FANTASTIC LINK that I recommend reading ,from a fellow blogger whom I read daily- David Berner. His dear friend, Gloria Cranmer Webster, is a very respected and well known FIRST NATIONS woman, leader, scholar, who tells it like it is regarding her thoughts on the rampant problems affecting the aboriginal communities in BC : http://thebernermonologues.blogspot.com/2008/02/important-letter-from-old-friend.html……. her letter sums it up concisely. I think I’ll send it to  Lois Boones office for review.

A wise man once told me to always leave them laughing, and if the following video link doesn’t tickle your funny bone, I don’t know what will !

The Florida Marlins are recruiting for the first ever, all male, PLUS-SIZE cheerleading squad to fire up the crowds, and held an open try-out Sunday. Men who try out have to be big, have to have the moves that will wow ‘em, and be able to strut their …stuff.  All I can say is - that’s a whooole lotta man……….  http://nbcsports.msnbc.com/id/23322110/

 Have a good one!
