This is upon request, in the spirit of inspiration for those who are trying to change their lives this year, or are continuing that sometimes long journey one travels when losing a considerable amount of weight. People whom I have met within the last 2 years often often have no idea of what I used to look like. Often, the reaction is one of disbelief when I tell them how big I really was, and that I lost it without the use of surgery, diet aids , or a diet program. I did not have a trainer, never used a gym, nor did I take supplements or metabolic boosters. In fact, I don’t believe in diets, and studies show “diets” dont work. It takes a serious change in your lifestyle- all facets of it. I would like to say my decision to lose the weight was motivated by health, but it wasnt- at least , not at first. Anger was the catalyst for this change ,although along the way, I did come to see how I had been slowly destroying my body. Imagine someone telling you you are a fat pig, so fat and disgusting, and then grabbing a handful of your belly and shaking it to demonstrate just how disgusting your body is.That’s what it took for me to make that change- it was anger pure and simple.
I look back now and thank that man, because to be honest, he saved my life. I needed that reality check, that wakeup call, that mean-ness to make me see myself the way others saw me. I knew I was fat, just not that fat. I used to go out at night to exercise, so no one would really see my huge body sweating with the exertion of simply walking fast. I bought a tension band and free weights to work my muscle groups at home, and started researching the net to come up with something that worked for me. But it turned out to be so simple. It all comes down to consuming more calories than you expend, and that is the truth for the vast majority of those who are overweight and obese, as much as they would like to blame it on something else.
In the following pictures, I am at my largest, over 340 lbs. The one on the right so accurately shows how desperately unhappy I was with my life at the time.
BEFORE
at my absolute largest.
I seem so sad- this is one of the few pictures I allowed during this time.
AFTER
It’s getting harder for the last bit to come off, and in fact, its taken longer than the bulk of it. Apparently, your body gets so used to the level of fitness you have achieved, that you must push even harder to the next level to really shake it up. So, I have had to come up with ways to trick the body – changing the times I eat and work out, different activities, longer and harder bursts mixed with rest days. I’m not worried though – I know what I can do, and how far I’ve come, and fast weight loss tends to never be permanent.
So, if you are trying to lose weight, or get fit, remember this. It has to be a lifestyle change, not a “diet”. What happens when you lose the weight? - you stop your ” program” or ” diet”, and bingo, the weight comes back. It happens all the time. If you want it to be forever, you have to make forever changes. I can eat a heck of a lot of food, as long as I balance it out with the appropriate amount of exercise. No more excuses, no more rationalizations. You are in control of what you put in your mouth, and how you live your life. And if you need help, feel free to contact me. You matter, and you can do it.

vava vooom!
Thanks, between you and Lady Shanny, it gives me encouragement to keep on track.
Mind you I’ve only wanting to loose 30-35 lbs, but it is the mentality I want to overcome. The depression and hopelessness of loosing and then putting it on.
Just got to get mad enough!
Did I read that right, 340 lbs? You don’t look that heavy in the picture.
Yes, Tomax, In the first ofthe before pictures, that is taken at my heaviest. The scale read 340lbs- but that is as high as the scale went. The doctor thought I was much likely higher than that. Thats part of the problem- many people weigh much more than they think, and at 5″10, with long legs and arms, I carried it as well as one can carry 340lbs or more.
Being a man, you can lose weight much faster and easier than a woman. I can offer suggestions if you are interested at any time- dont hesitate!
[...] Here’s another interesting post I read today by lailayuile [...]
Open to suggestions any time.
I’m starting to make this my daily routine:
1. Walk during lunch hour and after supper.
2. Using a calorie counter the wife got me.
3. Avoid pop and chips. *sigh*
not knowing how you normally eat/drink, heres a couple tips.
Walking is better than nothing, but it has to be very fast- power walking, etc, and sustained for at least 30 mins. Better to find a harder cardio workout.
you’re a man, your muscle groups are larger and work harder than a womans. do some weight lifting a few times a week to build muscle, which burns more calories doing ANYTHING, than fat does.
Pop- bad bad bad… chips bad bad bad.
drink calorie free pop, preferably caffeine free, but keep it to a minumum, it does nothing but make you thirstier and causes water retention. Chips ok in extreme moderation.
never go 2 hours without drinking a glass of water- often thirst is mistaken for hunger. Cut back coffee if you drink it. It s diuretic. ad dlemon to water to make it taste better. Watch what calories you drink in general- juice, mochas , lattes etc hold a lot of calories.
never eat past 7 or 8 pm. you will likely never work it off.
just a start – but some good tips. Never eat while watching tv. sit and enjoy your food! oh yeah, watch portions. Most of us eat wayyy too much of everything- look at the actual portion on the box, or research it. an appropriate serving of meat is the size of a deck of cards- not very big!
I have to confess we got a BowFlex and its been sitting idle for a couple of years now.
Discipline is lacking on my side.
[...] Before and After – the evolution of Laila Yuile [...]
Did you end up with a lot of loose skin? Or were you able to keep that in check and if so,how? Great job!!
Hi Veronica. yes, I did end up with excess skin- really, it is inevitable for most fat people who have lost a lot of weight.
After carrying around so much excess weight for so long, the skin loses its elasticity and cannot return to its original size. Its really not like being pregnant for only 9 months anbd your belly returns to normal, rather the complete opposite.
I did everything I could to promote skin shrinkage while I lost weight, I was very athletic and toned, stayed hydrated, cream, etc, but I was still left with excess abdominal skin and excesss skin under the upper arms – normal spots. When I can afford it, I plan to have abdominoplasty – The medical system will not cover the surgery and it costs about $10,000 dollars. The arms dont bother me, but the tummy skin does. I hate it. I cant wear a bathing suit, and it makes my clothing fit oddly sometimes, and I really look forward to the day it is gone. It will be the ultimate reward for me, for losing all this weight the old-fashioned way without drugs or surgery. I really did change my entire lifestyle.
The funny thing is that most fat people dont think about stuff like this while we are fat, and it comes as a bit of a shocker when it happens. Its really not as simple as losing weight, when you look at the long term plan. Hope this helps, and feel free to email me through the contact page if there is anything else you want to know, or if you need help! Best of the season to you.
wow hmm u sure dont look heavy in that pic of urs or is that why its kind of a head shot? the word evolution doesnt really fit though dont you say?
Wow Amanda, you got me. It’s all a giant scam. I really just faked all the thinner pictures with Photo Shop. Honestly, how did I think I could fool all of you intellectuals out there?
hi…..i was searching my name in google and i saw your story, i was wondering if i could have ur e mail address so you can maybe help me with my weight loss
I think that your poetry is beautiful , so I’m at the back of a long line , I know . But , I looked on Amazon.com to see if you had any poetry books published ? Am I looking in the wrong place ?
Are your poems published .
Hi Stanley – first, thank you for the compliment! I am always glad to hear when someone enjoys my writing. And yes, I have been published several times in past years, but using my maiden name – I’m not sure if anything is still in active publication. I do still really enjoy poetry, but with 4 kids its hard to find time alone to let my inspiration loose!
ThanQ for the bio information . I’d still like to see if any of your poetry books are still available . However , your maiden name might be a personal and private thing ? If it is , I’ll pass on my quest .
But thank you , for even answering me .
We found you , when we were trying to keep track of Simi and Dave , after their stupid firing from BT . There you were , being every one’s crying towel .
We’re from the lower 48 , in Michigan , but we fell in love with anything Vancouver , about five years ago after we spent three great September weeks , in BC .
I’m 84 , my Eva is 82 , but we haven’t thrown in the towel yet . The Man (Lady) upstairs has been good to us .
I must tell you , as a result of reading you , we found the interview with Ben Meisner done by Jeanne Anderson . That is a saver . It did , however , make me feel older than dirt . Here I am reading about the ancient days of yore , only to find that I predate them . That was a “Wow” . But the interview is/was a classic . To be saved in a desk drawer which is my saver drawer , always overflowing .
The onion story will be passed on to my grandaughters . I can’t let them miss that one . The little guy is a show .
Well, I’m glad that you enjoy the site! I’ve often wondered why I have so many American fans and you’ve explained yourself well. Vancouver can be a wonderful place to visit, as well as the entire province. I’m particularly fond of Vancouver Island- beautiful, beautiful scenery.
The Ben Meisner interview was great- Thanks to BC Mary for that, her link is on the side and you will find even more wonderful links on her site. Although I’m not apt to post my maiden name here( as you know, reading poetry can be an insight into a persons psyche that often is very revealing) I would be more than glad to email you some other poems.
I’m glad you enjoyed it. Your visits here are most welcome!
